For most of the last decade, a Druid Hills weekend meant a slow arc between Emory Village and the Olmsted Linear Park, with Fernbank as the rainy-day anchor. That habit still works. It is also, quietly, becoming out of date.
If you have driven the Briarcliff corridor lately, you have felt it. A new Italian kitchen is now taking takeout orders on Briarcliff. A senior-living campus is preparing to break ground on thirty-two acres of Emory land, with the 1922 Candler Mansion at its center. Callanwolde's autumn concert series is once again pulling headliners onto the lawn behind the Tudor. Two blocks of what used to be a commuter road are, in aggregate, becoming the most programmed stretch of the neighborhood.
The thesis, in one sentence
Late summer 2026 is the season Druid Hills' center of gravity tilts east, away from the Village roundabout and onto the Candler-era spine of Briarcliff Road. Every item below is evidence for that claim.
What's new inside a five-minute drive
Start with the restaurant everyone on the neighborhood Slack has been asking about. Novo Cucina is now open for takeout on Briarcliff while it awaits its liquor license, according to BusyBody ATL's April 13 briefing. The soft-launch pattern is worth reading correctly. A takeout-first window means the kitchen is calibrating before the dining room fills, which is a good moment to try the menu at a lower price of entry than you will get in October.
Coffee is following the same road. Rough Draft Atlanta's March openings roundup flagged San Francisco Coffee expanding to Midtown and Druid Hills, a small regional chain that has been an intown fixture for years. For a neighborhood whose caffeine map has essentially been Starbucks at Emory Village plus whatever Emory Point offers, a second serious operator changes the morning routine.
The most consequential Briarcliff news is not a restaurant at all. Corso Atlanta, which has become a nationally recognized leader in the development of ultra luxury senior living communities, is expanding. This fall, it's expected to break ground on a 500-unit community in the Druid Hills neighborhood. The development is to be spread over a 32-acre site owned by Emory University. The scale alone reshapes the pedestrian count on the block. What matters to residents who care about the neighborhood's architectural memory is what sits in the middle of it: the rebuilding of the old Candler Mansion, which was completed in 1922. It's located near the corner of Briarcliff Road and University Drive, just south of North Decatur Road. The land was a working farm prior to being purchased in 1912 by Asa Griggs "Buddy" Candler, Jr., heir of The Coca-Cola Company. Over the years, Candler and his wife, Helen, added onto the property, which ultimately included 40 rooms, several greenhouses, two solariums, a ballroom, and even a zoo.
Read that list again. Forty rooms, two solariums, a ballroom. The Candler family did not build a house on Briarcliff; they built a compound, and the plan is to rebuild it. Whether or not you ever set foot inside, the silhouette returns to the street.
The through-line: a Candler restored the Briarcliff estate a century ago, another Candler heir built Callanwolde a mile north, and both properties are, in different ways, back in circulation this fall.
Fernbank, August into September
Fernbank has been rewriting its own after-hours program for three summers now, and this August is when it starts to feel like a permanent evening venue. Offered the second Friday of each month, Fernbank After Dark brings the museum to life after hours with exhibit access, music, full bars, small plates, science demonstrations, giant screen movies, and the chance to explore WildWoods after dark. Exclusively for ages 21+, it's equal parts date night, friend night, and "why haven't we done this before?" night. Pricing is transparent enough to plan around: tickets are $18.95 for members and $23.95 for nonmembers when purchased online.
If you have kids in the house, the sibling series is running through the last stretch of Dinosaur Summer. As part of Fernbank's Dinosaur Summer, LATER: Rex Factor is a monthly event series where you can experience the museum at night with hands-on activities, a film in the Giant Screen Theater, and games designed for curious minds. Southwest Gwinnett Magazine's January preview clarified the cadence: an all-ages nighttime experience, will offer nighttime hours one Friday each month from June-August in a casual museum environment. August is the last month on that calendar.
One practical shift worth knowing before you plan a Saturday around the museum: the café is turning over. The Fernbank Café will transition to Bean Sprouts (opening Sept. 1) with interim food/culinary services provided by Firefly Catering and Fork in the Road Food Truck (Aug 1-31). Which is to say, in August you are eating from a food truck under the tree canopy, and after Labor Day you are eating inside a new concept. Both are worth the visit for different reasons.
The forest itself remains the most under-used amenity in Druid Hills. One ticket opens three worlds of experiences through exhibits, the giant screen theater, and 75 acres of nature—all included with general admission. Fernbank is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with Fernbank Forest closing at 4:30 p.m. If August humidity has you avoiding the Olmsted parks, the old-growth canopy is a different climate.
Callanwolde's autumn lawn
Two miles north on Briarcliff, the Candler thread picks up again. Callanwolde was built in 1920 as the home of Charles Howard Candler, eldest son of The Coca-Cola Company founder Asa Candler, and the estate now runs one of the more distinctive outdoor concert programs in the city. Jazz on the Lawn returns in 2026 for another unforgettable season of live music under the stars at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. Set against the backdrop of Callanwolde's historic estate and lush grounds, this beloved Atlanta tradition brings together nationally recognized artists, local favorites, and music lovers of all ages for evenings filled with incredible performances, community, and autumn magic. Guests are invited to spread out on the lawn, bring a picnic, sip their favorite beverages, and enjoy a relaxed concert experience unlike any other in the city.
A few logistics that separate a good Jazz on the Lawn night from a frustrated one:
- Gates open and check-in begins at 6:30 PM. Concerts start at 7:30 PM and end at 9:30 PM, including a 15-minute intermission at the artist's discretion.
- Guests with VIP tickets, a prepaid parking pass, or a disability parking permit may park at Callanwolde. All other ticket holders are required to park at The Warren, formerly known as Metro City Church, located at 999 Briarcliff Road NE, Atlanta, GA, 30306. This lot is a short 0.3-mile walk across the street from the main Callanwolde campus.
- Gabrielle Cavassa, recently signed to Blue Note Records and a winner of the International Sarah Vaughan Jazz Vocal Competition in 2021, leads a quartet ahead of her debut Blue Note record set to release in Spring 2026. She is the sort of name Callanwolde has quietly built its reputation on.
For anyone who has only ever walked past the mansion on a garden tour, an evening on the amphitheater lawn is a different reading of the same building.
Where the Village still wins
None of this argues that Emory Village is done. It argues that the Village is now one node among three, not the default. The Fall Festival draws hundreds of neighbors, with a costume parade, Glenn Church's trunk or treat, food, games, face painting, vendors, music and adult beverages, and the Oxford Road Visitor's Deck, located at 1390 Oxford Road and attached to Barnes & Noble bookstore and Starbucks, is available all-day Saturday and Sunday, and after 7 p.m. Monday-Friday, which is still the best free parking secret in this half of the city. The Emory Farmers Market restarts with the academic calendar in August. Wagaya, Sankranti Indian Kitchen, and Sweetgreen keep the lunch rotation honest.
The Village is your Sunday morning. Briarcliff, this fall, is your Friday and Saturday night.
